It’s been quite a week…but thank God for the Funk. Here’s what’s fly:
The much anticipated three disc album from Rae Sremmurd is finally here. There are 27 songs total and it features 9 cuts from the group on SR3MM, 9 from Swae Lee’s solo joint Swaecation and 9 from Slim Jxmmi’s Jxmtro (Jimtro).
Youngboy NBA aka NBA Youngboy aka Youngboy Never Broke Again has got to be one of the wildest names in hip hop I’ve ever seen, but good thing the kid can rap. Until Death Call My Name is his debut project that starts off strong, tapers off in the middle, but gets back to form at the end. Youngboy’s style is very similar to 90’s southern rap but grown in today’s era.
Royce is back again in only a 2 month span. It’s crazy that a lyricist of his caliber could put out two projects so close together, and I’m not sure how well that’s going to work for PRhryme 2 sales going forward, but the Book of Ryan is meant to be everything Royce. Much like his last solo album Layers, Book of Ryan, will dive into the depths of Royce’s life with deep bars.
After having the biggest artist in the game come through with a verse on Look Alive, Blocboy JB continued to grind and put out hits like Rover. Now he releases his full on mixtape SIMI.
Apparently Travis teased fans with his first single off Astroworld all week and now he’s delivered Watch. Good timing too seeing as there’s a lot of infamous buzz surrounding one of the features right now, and Ye addresses some of that on this.
Thugger made two declarations for 2018. One, he wouldn’t release music for a while in tribute to his deaf brother, and two, he’s changed his artist name to SEX. He’s followed neither claim, but that might be for the best if it means we get more songs like Ooou.
Remember that Wal-Mart yodelling kid who blew up on social media? Well it turns out Atlantic Records signed him to a deal and he’s got his first record out: Famous. And I’m not going to lie, it’s a hit. But how does this 11 year old kid have so many girl problems already?
This might be the only Zaytoven beat in history that doesn’t contain a plethora of piano keys. When Offset and 21 released their joint project Without Warning; without warning, fans were in for a treat. Hot Spot sounds nothing like the project so it may have been a leftover, but it’s really got that old Migos style fans grew to love with new vocals from 21, sounding like the fourth member of the Migos.
I had no idea these guys were collaborating on a join project, and they wouldn’t be my answer to who do I want to see collaborate, but Joyner Lucas and Chris Brown have been bodying the singles they’ve put out so far for their album Angels & Demons. I Don’t Die has a cool video to boot. Hopefully the rest of the project follows suit when it drops.
No Shame is a single off the 2018 Superfly movie soundtrack. In it, Future & PND talk about finding new highs. Not usually a fan of soundtrack songs, but y’all can judge for yourselves.
As we get closer to Activated‘s May 11th release, Tee Grizzley stays in the mix with his latest single Fuck It Off.
Playboi Carti had the biggest song of the summer last year, but has been relatively quiet since. He’s been working on his latest album and drops Love Hurts which has a unique beat.
DJ Envy and Chris Brown decided to hop on the mysterious artist, H.E.R.’s, big hit Focus. It’s got a blend of Chris Brown’s vocals which intertwine with H.E.R.
Former NFL running back Arian Foster aka Bobby Feeno has transitioned to the realm of hip hop. 99 per cent of athlete artists are bogus, but Bobby Feeno’s actually got a good project on his hands. He gets to rapping on Gawd with a tint of J. Cole in his vocals.
Been a minute since we’ve heard Souljaboy. Last time he made headlines was his infamous story turned meme about him “foiling” a robbery. On I Got The Yop On Me he continues his gun talk, but it’s on a good beat this time.
It’s a New York beef ting. Casanova goes hard at 6ix9ine with this diss track Gripped Up.
