It’s 4/20 and the Funk is probably more alive than it’s ever been. Here’s the death to winter edition of the Friday Funk.
The real is back, the ville is back. Flow so bananas, here, peel this back. The surprise albums keep on coming, J Cole sprung out of no where and releases his latest project KOD, short for Kids on Drugs, King Overdosed, or Kill Our Demons. This year, Cole’s had some stellar guest verses on both Royce and Jeezy’s projects, so let’s hope that momentum carries on to his own.
Likely off their three disc project, Rae Sremmurd recruit Travis Scott for their latest single CLOSE. In it we hear Swae Lee croon about trust and being too close to a woman and Travis lends his bars on the intro.
Summer hit alert. Teenage country singer Khalid recruits 6LACK and Ty for a strong singing trifecta for OTW (On The Way). Three hit singers, one hit song.
A lot of rapping in two minutes on a sophisticated trap beat.
Tay Keith is really about to the next Metro Boomin…Hunnid Bands has Wiz flexing about his money with a mesmerizing piano beat to back it up. It’s catchy and the hook only serves to get itself stuck in your head.
Tinashe was poised for pop stardom when she first hit the scene. Her hit song 2 On was a huge radio anthem and even got a remix by an artist that goes by the name of Drake. Unfortunately, her music has faltered since and it doesn’t help that she blamed her problems on other artists like Beyonce and Rihanna. But now she’s back with her new album Joy Ride and despite her being projected to only sell 15k, she’s got some good tunes on this one.
JB has been working his way up the ranks of the hip hop game. With two hits already in 2018, he tries his hand at a third. Bloc is a very ambitious try though, a song with no drums and a beat that sounds like pots and pans…I’m not all the way with this one.
*The remix link is in the title* Damian Marley’s hit record from his album Stony Hill, was already a smoker friendly tune. The remix however, gets a 4/20 revamp with some Taylor Gang hittas.
With all the new waves going on in hip-hop, emo rap is poised to take front stage in an era where it seems everyone can relate. Princess Nokia has easily made this wave her own with this song, and it’s a nice mellow shift from everything else that’s flooded the culture.
Chris Rivers is another up and coming artist who’s starting to get some buzz. Every Wednesday he drops his own rendition of classic hip-hop songs and takes them to new heights. This week he hops on Cardi B’s I Like It Like That and gets to the bars.
Speaking of remixes, Vado and Dave East still haven’t missed on their run of collaborations. This time they set their eyes on women’s anthem Nice For What, and it comes with some beat tweaks to differentiate from the original.
Twist does his best Lil Wayne impression on Fires & Desires, Trippie Redd croons his heart out on the hook, and AutoTunechi rides off at the end. Never thought I’d see this mix of artists, but it surprisingly made for a good mix.
Out of all the recent Party leaks, Mobbin sounds like it’s poised to be a big song once all the mixing issues get sorted out for the full release. It’s true to PND’s sound.
“I came back like LeBron down 3-to-1!” Casey Veggies with a statement that he’s back in the game. Show Off has him and Wiz posted in a club and Wiz makes his 3rd appearance on the Funk’s 6th edition.
